Arguably one of the most frustrating aspects of growing up is acne. It can spring up, seemingly out of nowhere and can be extremely difficult to get rid of. But do you know what acne facts are real and what are myths? Keep reading to find out!
Food can affect acne
MAGIC/MYTH: This is one of the most frequently debated subjects in regards to acne. No, food is not the sole cause of acne. That being said, there are a few foods that can cause acne to act up. For instance, dairy can be a big contributor to skin problems. Though scientists haven’t pinpointed the reason, it is believed that hormones from pregnant cows end up in the milk, and thus us. So, if you are having acne problems, pay attention to what you’re eating. Looking for crossover between your skin and your food could help solve your problem.
The location of acne relates to its cause
MAGIC: Facial mapping is a great tool for discovering what could be the cause of your acne. Let’s work our way around the face and learn what acne in these different areas means.
Forehead - Forehead acne could be caused by the hair products that you’re using. There may be pore-clogging ingredients that are affecting your skin in those areas and causing breakouts. Check out CosDNA.com to learn about the ingredients in your favorite products and how they can affect your skin.
Nose - This is one of the more common spots to get acne. Typically this is just due to an excess of oils. Extracting these are fairly easy, and can be done regularly if the acne is persistent. You can either use a pore strip at home, or go to a dermatologist in your area for an extraction. Some spas even offer extractions as part of a facial package, though make sure they are reputable and know what they’re doing.
Cheeks - There are many reasons why you may develop acne on your cheeks. Your phone, pillows, and hands are all things that frequently come in contact with your cheeks. Make sure you keep all these items in clean condition to reduce acne flare ups.
Mouth - Ok, we don’t mean in your mouth, but sometimes pimples crop up a little too close for comfort. It’s possible that, like your hair products, your toothpaste has some of those pore-clogging ingredients. Make sure to read the label!
Chin and Neck - Chin acne is typically labeled the “hormonal” acne. Often it will appear due to stress, mismanaged diet, or menstruation. This acne will go away in time and proper care.
Acne means you haven’t washed your face enough
MYTH: This is so untrue. It’s not uncommon to get pimples even though you wash twice a day. In fact, washing too much could be causing pimples. Every time you wash, you strip your face of its natural oils. Those oils stop your skin from drying out, and dry skin can lead to more inflammation and your acne feeling and looking terrible.
Popping pimples is fine if…
MAGIC: Don’t pop your pimples. Seriously. Every time you pinch, pick, or pop, bacteria is being spread around your face and pushed deeper into the infected pore. The only safe way to extract pimples is to have it done by a registered dermatologist. They know how to extract in a safe way that will clean the pore out and not cause any permanent damage to the skin.
If you have acne, you need to moisturize
MAGIC: This is true! Like we discussed previously, dry skin can cause acne to become more irritated and produce more oil that will ultimately clog pores. By keeping moisturized, you reduce the chance of extra oil being produced and allow your acne to heal. The best way to heal your acne is to get a moisturizer that has healing ingredients like aloe vera that can regenerate cells and speed up the healing process. You can check out our Aloe Infusion Face and Body Moisturizer here.
